I've been in the printshop this month, and I thought I'd toss up what I've done already. I've also completed three more from my Bell Island aquatint series, but I've yet to scan those in.

Art Deadlines

I came across this webpage today: Art Deadlines List

Seems like a lot of text to slog through, but if you're up to the task, there's probably several opportunities there for you. Every now and then I'm hankering for a deadline, aren't you?

And here's another one: Artshow. I just Googled art deadlines.

ALSO: I just found this Canadian portrait competition, with a $3000 prize (although the website looks a bit shabby): http://www.kingstonprize.ca/ Anyone heard of this before? The deadline is May 1st, and portraits may be either paintings or drawings, and must be made from life within the 24 months preceding the closing date. From the site:

Jury members are Eliza Griffiths, artist (Montreal); Bill Kirby, Executive Director of the Centre for Canadian Contemporary Art (Toronto); and Richard Rhodes, editor of Canadian Art magazine (Toronto).

From the entries received, the jury will select thirty portraits for the exhibition, which will be held in October 2007 at the Firehall Theatre in Gananoque, Ontario. The prizewinners will be announced at a Gala Preview, and the People’s Choice will be announced near the closing of the exhibition.

Upside: You only have to send a CD, not the actual artwork. Downside: $25 entry fee.

Banff Mountain Photography Competition

We hope you have been busy taking photographs for the 2007 Banff Mountain Photography Competition. Last year’s competition saw over 2,100 images from 27 countries around the world. In addition to the Grand Prize, the jury chooses winners in five subject categories and one regional category, with ten photographs receiving special mention.

In addition to over $6000 in cash and prizes from our sponsors, your work could enjoy international exposure. Winning images will be exhibited at The Banff Centre, on our website, and on a whirlwind tour to select locations worldwide.

All entries must arrive in our office in Banff by Tuesday, May 1, 2007. Winners will be notified by June 16.

Eastern Edge Gallery in St. John's is looking for proposals for their next year of programming:

2007 RBC Canadian Painting Competition

Got yourself a painting? Well send it on in. Winners will be announced in September, with the national winner receiving $25,000, and two honourable mentions each receiving $15,000. Not too shabby.

Style Wars

Hoo boy, I just saw this awesome documentary on Google Video from 1983 called Style Wars. It's about the graffiti scene in New York, particularly in and on the public trains. There's a lot of break dancing in there too. And now I've got Grandmaster Flash stuck in my head. But watch this instead of Deal or No Deal. And everyone was way skinnier back then, hey?

Chiropractic Tips for Shoveling Snow:
Winter is here and snow removal is a major problem for many people. The following tips are offered for shoveling driveways and walks:

DOs
-Stretch your back, neck, arms and legs with a brief warm-up.
-Use a shovel appropriate in length and weight to your height and strength.
-Bend from the knees while lifting and keep the spine as straight as possible.
-Push the snow when it is practical, as opposed to lifting and throwing it.
-Deposit the snow close to where you are shoveling, to avoid heaving it across a wide area.

DO NOTs
-Shovel at too rapid a pace. Work at a pace fitting to your age and strength.
-Lift snow with your back. Bending and twisting the spine are common causes of disc and ligament damage. Do use your arms and body to deposit snow in one smooth motion.
-Shovel with your feet planted firmly in one spot. Allow your legs and thighs to help your upper body and arms deposit the snow to the side.
-Lift large amounts of snow in one scoop of the shovel. To avoid back strain, shovel light to moderate amounts of snow per load.
-Overwork yourself. If you are huffing and puffing, stop immediately and rest.

Call for Illustrators

Indyish is looking for illustrators to contribute to the ongoing evolution of the relay art project The Assembly:

Sounds like a huge collaborative project - this is from the website:
The Assembly: 7 teams of writers authored 7 scripts. 7 directors are using those scrips to produce 7 movies. 7 bands are composing and performing original film scores.

To compliment this month-long insanity, and with help from Celtx, Indyish is producing a project ‘zine that will contain the 7 scripts. That’s where you come in.

Illustrators interested in participating:Your task will be to develop an image to compliment one script. You’ll be given a text at random and have one week to draw or design something inspired by the document. Your imagery can decorate the script pages, or add a single 8 1/5 by 11 page to the document. Submissions of drawings, photos, collage are welcome but must be submitted in 300 dpi tiff or jpg format. Please submit both a colour and black/white version of your piece.
Your work must be finished by Sunday February 25, 2007. The zines will be assembled and made available in basic Black and White in time for the screening and party, March 10 2007 at Friendship Cove.
This book will also be published in full colour via Lulu.com. License: CC Attribution as usual.

the Graphic Novel

There's an awesome audio/visual slideshow-type deal at the New York Times website called Graphic Novels: A Visual Language. It features Seth, Chris Ware, Spiegelman, Joe Sacco, and Chester Brown. Check it out, it's really neat to hear these guys talk about their own work.

Here's the poster I'm designing for a lecture series at the RCA. Check it out! Gerard will be in town talking about porn and radioactive bunnies or something.

Scope out these comics

These are the tiny comics I submitted to the The Scope. The last two are in the latest issue, but the first isn't because it was too hard to read. Ah well. Anyway, they're still hankering for some contributers, so get in touch if you're interested!

Still Frame Copy

Lookin' for some photo-refs to practice with and hit on the idea of freeze-framing some DVD's to get some nicely lit faces, etc. Anyway, here's my first go. Viggo Mortensen from Fellowship of the Rings. It's not bad, but I think I lost something around the eyes.
